Just Started a New Blog!

I love, love, love this blog, but sometimes, I would really like to talk about things other than being thrifty and saving money. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the topic, but I do sometimes want to tell you all other things too!!! So, I decided that along side this blog, I would start another one for things not money-related!

I thought long and hard about what I was going to call this new adventure of mine. I thought about titles that were related to family, titles related to decorating, and titles relating to other things that I love. There's just one problem with all of these though. I feel like whatever title you choose, is what your blog should discuss. I didn't want to limit myself. I wanted to be free to branch out and talk about whatever came to my mind!

All my life, my family has called me their little Drama Queen. Not always a title I have loved, but I have finally decided to accept it! I am what I am! Sooo.....if you have a few minutes, head over to my newest adventure and check out: Random Rantings of a Drama Queen!

One of My Favorite New Sites!

I stumbled upon this site about a week ago, and as much as I wanted to be selfish and keep all of their ideas to myself, I decided to share it with YOU!!! Don't you feel special?! You will after you visit this site!

So...without further to do...my fav new site is (drumroll please).....This Young House!!! This is seriously one of the best sites that I have come across. This young couple have bought an old house, and have totally renovated it! It is GORGEOUS!!! I am so jealous! And, the crazy thing is-they are my age-27-and they know how to do all of this, and have made this site their full time jobs! Totally wish I could do that!

This young couple gives advice about how to redo your home, whether it is redecorating, or doing actual remodels. You can actually hire them to help you redecorate your house (for a fee, of course)-they call this their "mood boards". While this might be what some people would choose to do, I am just going to drool over the pictures of their home, and maybe try to recreate some of them for myself! If there is something that I cannot recreate, they actually have a shop on their site where you can purchase some of their items, at a really reasonable cost!

Probably my favorite area of their site is the "How-To" area. There are TONS of different topics to choose from, and they give you great tips on how to accomplish projects! I could spend hours...well, who am I kidding...I HAVE spend hours, pouring over this "How-To" section!

Whatever you do, definitely check out their "House Tour" section! You will be amazed at what this talented young couple has done! I am so totally impressed, and I know that you will be too! Leave me some comment love and let me know what you think! :)

Something different this Saturday

So I know that I have been using Saturday's post for my "Supermarket Saturdays" feature, but we honestly don't need to go to the store this weekend! We have enough odds and ends to get us through for the week, which I'm so excited about because we are saving ourselves close to $100.00 this week! :)

I have decided to talk about the Saturday Spotlight on the wonderful SITS site! Now I don't gain anything personally for talking about this site, but I spent about 45 minutes this morning pouring over it, and decided that I just have to share it with you! (For those of you who are not a part of SITS (The Secret is in the Sauce), I would highly recommend that you join-it is a wonderful support group for us bloggers, and we are all supported by comments left from fellow SITSta's!) Anyway, every Saturday, they do a Saturday Spotlight. I always like who they choose, but today's spotlight is extra special, and so I just had to talk about them!

The Saturday Spotlight feature is Dali Decals! The second that I clicked over to their page, I fell in love! This site has the most gorgeous wall decals! These have become quite popular over the past few years, but I have honestly never found any that I am just crazy about...until now!!! Dali Decals has one of the largest selections of wall decals that I have ever come across, and their prices are definitely the best that I have found! The prices that I saw while browsing through their decals ranged from as little as $5.00 to $200.00. (The $200.00 was for a large tree that would probably take up most of your wall!) They offer everything from huge tree decals to monograms to headboards and children's decals! These do NOT look cheap! They would definitely dress up any room, and you will be the talk of the town!

One of the best things about Dali Decals is that they offer all of their decals in a HUGE selection of colors! Most places offer decals in your typical black, white, and maybe brown or gold; but Dali Decals offers everything from lime green (and we all know that I LOVE green!), to cardinal red, to purple, and any other color of the rainbow!!!

For those of you not familiar with wall decals, one of the best things about them is that they easily stick to your wall, and you can take them down whenever you feel like it! You don't have to repaint or anything like that! Dali Decals sends you easy instructions for applying and removing your decal with any purchase.

Please, if you have a moment, go check out this wonderful site! I fell in love with it the moment that I saw it, and I would be willing to bet that if you like decorating and a good deal as much as I do, you will fall in love with Dali Designs too!

Saving Money on Energy Costs

We are all looking for ways to save money. I have been doing some research on saving money when it comes to energy expenses. Here are ten inexpensive things you can do to help save energy and money:

Compact fluorescent light bulbs

Price: $2.00 to $3.00
Description: The CFL, as it is called, is longer-lasting and more efficient than the incandescent bulb. All fluorescent bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, though, so just make sure that you dispose of them correctly.
Savings: Around $10 per year per bulb.

Window insulator kit

Price: About $20
Description: An hour or so with a window insulator kit - which requires the use of a portable hair dryer - is an easy and cost-effective way to keep out drafts.
Savings: Windows and doors account for about 11 percent of heat loss in a home, so insulating windows could pay you back in a matter of a few months.

Smart strip

Price: $41.95 for the 10-outlet
model.
Description: This device allows you to turn off the "power sucker" devices - like VCRs and DVD players that cost you around $4 a year, even when idle - when you turn off another device, like a TV. At the same time, it lets you keep power going to things that need to stay on, so your DVR will still be able to record your favorite programs overnight.
Savings: Use it to control six or seven devices and it can pay for itself in energy savings within a year.

Draft stopper

Price: $10 to $20
Description: Especially in older buildings, drafts coming in under the doors can account for 20 percent of a home's heat loss. You can find lots of door draft stoppers in home improvement stores or online, but if you're a crafty sort, you can also take the leg of an old pair of jeans, sew up the ends and fill it with buckwheat or sand, or even clean kitty litter.
Savings: Varies from house to house.

Low-flow shower heads

Price: around $12
Description: Not only do low-flow shower heads save water, they also help save on energy because you'll use less hot water. Federal regulations require that new shower heads cut the water flow to 2.5 gallons per minute, but this low-flow shower head can bring your water flow as low as 1.2 to 1.4 gallons per minute, which for most households means that it will cut down, not only on water used, but on the energy used to heat that water.
Savings: Recover the cost of the shower head within a few months.

Insulation blanket

Price: $20 to $30
Description: Wrapping your water heater in an insulation blanket will reduce the amount of heat lost through the tank's walls by about 25 to 45 percent.
Savings: They'll pay for themselves in reduced heating bills in a matter of months.

Child-safe plugs

Price: $3.29 for a package of 12 caps.
Description: Electrical wall outlets are another small, often overlooked culprit for drafts. Plug them up with plastic child safe plugs and keep out small fingers and drafts at the same time.
Savings: Overall heating cost savings varies.

Lamp socket auto-off light control

Price: $11.99
Description: If lights are consistently left on in places like the bathroom, the garage or the closet, this little gadget inserted in the socket automatically switches off the light after 15 minutes, and it works with both incandescent bulbs and CFLs.
Savings: Say a 100-watt light is left on each night for 10 hours, the auto-off control would pay for itself in a few months.

Slow cooker

Price: $149.99 for the KitchenAid 7-quart KSC700. (This is the top-of-the-line slow cooker!)
Description: If you can't afford a new Energy Star stove, think about investing in a slow cooker, especially if you like to make casseroles or large batches of food like beef stew or cassoulet. Good slow cookers can range from the $19.99 to $279.95. Mine was $39.99, and I love it! I use it at least once a week!
Savings: Varies, but the typical slow cooker will have used less than a kilowatt of power after seven hours of cooking.

Heart of a Servant Sundays

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you all are having a wonderful day with your families. We have had such a good day. We went to church this morning, and then my parents and my grandmothers came over for lunch and for egg hunting with our two-year old son. He loved it! He is now a huge fan of the Easter bunny! :)

I hope that you all were able to fulfill your "Heart of a Servant Sunday" goal for last week. I just know that if you will do small, kind things for other people, that you will feel so blessed.

What are you going to do this week to help someone? I am going to take some of my son's clothes that he has outgrown up to my office. My workplace is collecting donations for those who lost everything in the firestorms that we had this past week. So many people lost everything except the clothes that they were wearing. If you can't think of something to do for someone this week, maybe you could pray for these people. They are going through such a difficult time, and they definitely need our prayers. Prayer is such a powerful tool that God has given us! Thank you Lord for giving us this outlet!

Oklahoma Firestorms

For those of you unaware of the devastating situation occurring in Oklahoma right now, I would like to fill you in so that you can keep these people in your thoughts and prayers. The following excerpt is from a news brief on http://www.koco.com/.

"The fires began Thursday afternoon along the Interstate 35 corridor in the central part of the state and continued to burn past nightfall, fueled by ferocious winds and an abundance of dry, early spring grass and brush.
"We have in excess of 100 homes that have been destroyed statewide," Emergency Management Director Albert Ashwood said Friday morning. "Originally we thought 100 were destroyed in the Midwest City and Choctaw areas, but that appears to be more like 100 structures. That's a good thing."
Water-dropping helicopters couldn't assist the ground effort because of winds that gusted to more than 60 mph in some areas on Thursday. With wind speeds slowing down, the Oklahoma National Guard will be able to help out Friday, Ashwood said.
Information on Friday morning indicates that nearly three dozen people have been injured."
This has been such a horrible tragedy for so many people throughout our state. There are many people who have lost everything. Thankfully, our house was no where near these fires, but several people that I work with had to evacuate their homes last night. Luckily, they didn't lose their homes, but many did. For those of you in Oklahoma, there are many ways to help out these people who have been devastated by the wildfires. Many locations throughout the Metro have set up donation sites where you can drop off items that will be needed. If you turn on the radio, they are announcing ways to help out at almost every commercial break. For those of you not in Oklahoma, one of the best ways that you can help is to pray for these people. If you feel like you would like to do more, you can go to any of the Oklahoma News websites, and there are links on ways that you can help. The Oklahoma News websites are: http://www.koco.com/, http://www.kfor.com/, and http://www.newsok.com/.

Swagbucks!

I just wanted to take a moment to tell you all about Swagbucks! I found out about this site through some fellow bloggers who have used it and loved it! Swagbucks is a search engine like Google or Yahoo, but instead of them making money off of you, they give you the rewards! There are different ways to receive Swagbucks, but the easiest that I have found is just by using them to search for what you are looking for. Randomly, a page will pop up saying that you have won a certain number of Swagbucks. I have only used this for about two weeks, and I have already earned 19 Swagbucks!

There is a Swagbucks store that you can go to and make purchases with the Swagbucks that you have earned. Products range anywhere from music to DVD's to Wii's! The more that you use the search engine, the more you will earn. I was really skeptical about this site, but I have talked to several people who have actually turned in their Swagbucks and received their prizes, and they have been completely happy with their experience!

The way I see it, if I can earn prizes for doing what I do anyway on the computer everyday, I think it is worth a try! You can try this out by just clicking on the blue "Search and Win" button at the top right-hand side of my blog. Try it out, and let me know what you think! :)

Pics of the Homestead!

Over the past few months, we have been hard at work re-doing our kitchen and adding some finishing touches around our home that we purchased almost a year ago. I wish that I had a picture that I could show you of our kitchen before we re-did it, but unfortunately, I do not. Try to picture in your mind honey-colored wood and the ugliest cream and red plaid wallpaper covering the wall. That was our kitchen! I am a complete green freak, so I wanted a great green color in the kitchen. I have always wanted white woodwork also-I think it is so clean looking and makes a space look larger. I really wish that I could show you this in person, because the pictures just don't do it justice!
Our finished kitchen! I love it!

One of our cabinets-it didn't have a door on it, so we just painted the back wall the same green as the rest of the kitchen. I love the bowls on the top shelf!
The vent hood was an ugly copper color-we painted it black to update it. The items hanging behind the range are from IKEA-one of my fav stores!

One of my favorite cabinets! It contains our glasses. We couldn't afford to put glass in the openings of the cabinets, so they are just open-it gives the same effect though. I don't know if you can tell, but I love the knobs we found! They perfectly match the green paint! We found them at Hobby Lobby on a half price sale!
One of my favorite areas in our house! I LOVE the pitcher and creamer and sugar set! It was a gift from the sister-in-law! Thank you! The green tray, I found at Hob Lob for $3.00! And...I made the recipe box!
love this! I hate the way a bottle of dish soap looks sitting out on the counter, and it's just not practical to have to dig through the cabinet everytime you need it. So, I found this great soap dispenser for the bathroom at Target for $9.99. It works perfectly for dish soap, and is a pretty finishing touch!
We had a really big empty wall in the kitchen that we just didn't know what to do with. We couldn't really afford to purchase a really large picture to fill up the space; plus, we hadn't found one that we were thrilled with. I was at Kohl's the other day and found these great shadowboxes! They came in a set of three for $20.00. The best thing of all-they were buy one, get one free! I went to Hob Lob with my mother, and found these great knick-knacks, and she was nice enough to offer to pay for them-so, I saved myself about $25.00! Thanks, Mom!
This sign was perfect for our house! And, for $4.99 at Hob Lob, I couldn't pass it up!

This is a shelf in our living room. The total cost of everything on here was probably around $15.00! Oh...and the green "&"-it is from Pottery Barn and it was clearanced to $3.82! What a bargain!

And finally....our coffee table! I made the boxes, and the white vase, I got at a store closing sale for $1.50. I also got the little bouquet of green flowers at that same sale for $2.00-they were so cute, I couldn't pass them up! The other items on the table were gifts!
Well, I hope you all have enjoyed this little tour of my home. As you can see, I love green, black, and white! The good thing about the way that we have decorated is that if I get tired of green, which I know that I will eventually will, it will be easy to change out the green for another color! Oh....and I forgot to mention....our kitchen re-model cost about $100.00!

Heart of a Servant Sundays

Happy Sunday! I hope that everyone is having a great day! For my family, Sunday's are the day that we go to church to worship God and fellowship with others. It is one of my favorite days of the week! I was thinking that I could use my Sunday posts to maybe help spread my faith, and help others in their spiritual walk. So...here it is...my Sunday posts are now going to be a part of a feature called "Heart of a Servant Sundays." Even if you are not a follower of Christ, I still believe that you can benefit from reading this post and participating!

Heart of a Servant Sundays are going to be about ways that we can have the heart of a servant and help others. So many times, people think that the only way they can help others is monetarily, but I am here to tell you that that is not true. There are so many different ways to serve others. Sometimes, someone just needs some encouraging words, a hug, a warm meal, someone to watch their child for a couple of hours. The possibilities are endless.

I am here to tell you about a couple who helped me out during a time of need about six years ago. I was going through a very difficult time in my life, and was struggling to make ends meet. There were times when I would honestly go about four days without eating anything but bread because it was all I could afford. I remained faithful to Him though, and continued praying and going to church.

Church became my favorite time of the week because this is where my support system was. A husband and wife that I had become very close to took me out to lunch one day after church. They told me that they were going to take me to the grocery store after lunch and buy me groceries for the week. I was taken aback! I told them that this was not necessary, but they insisted, and said that they had been blessed financially, and that they wanted to help me. So, after lunch, they took me to the grocery store and asked me what type of food I liked. They had me help them pick out some food that I would like, and then they added a ton more to the cart. I couldn't believe it! They ended up buying me about $200.00 worth of groceries, and it fed me for about a month as I was able to freeze a lot of it. I will never forget these wonderful people and what they did for me. They were there for me in my biggest time of need. They truly had a servant heart.

Now I know that this was an example of how someone helped me in a financial way, but really, there are so many other ways to be a servant. I have been thinking about what I can do this week to be a servant to somebody else. I have decided that this week, I am going to send a card to one of my friends who is going through a time of illness right now. She has been sick for weeks, and is really feeling down. Even though she is sick, she has still made sure to ask how I am doing and ask about some health issues I have been having. She doesn't even complain about her own illness! She is so selfless, and a wonderful Christian example. I think that I will let her know that I appreciate her and let her know that I am thinking about her and praying for her. I know that this isn't much, but sometimes a note can go a long way.

Please, leave me a comment and let me know what you are going to do this week to show your servant heart. Or, if you're not sure, let me know what you think of this feature. I love to hear from you.

The Servant Song

Make me a servant,
Lord make me like You;
For You are a Servant,
Make me one too.

Lord, make me a servant,
Do what You must do,
To make me a servant;
Lord, make me like You.

Supermarket Saturdays

Hello everyone! I'm sorry it's been a week since my last post, but it was a crazy week! I hope to do better this week! I have decided that on Saturday's, I am now going to do a feature called, "Supermarket Saturdays." Since Saturday seems to be the day that I go to the grocery store, I thought, "Why not share my menu for the week with my readers?". My goal is to provide food that is homemade, inexpensive, and somewhat healthy for my family. Our money is extremely tight right now since my husband got laid off, so my goal is not to spend more than $100.00 per week on food-this includes eating out. Once I go to the store, I will post how much I ended up spending, and hopefully, I will be within budget! So....without further to do....here is my menu for the next week!

Dinner-Eat Out

This hopefully will be a fairly inexpensive trip to the grocery store, as I have planned meals around what I have in my pantry and freezer, and also around our grocery store's sale this week. We have hamburger meat, fajitas (meat and veggies), and pork chops in our freezer already. We also have macaroni and cheese, canned green beans, carrots, and corn in our pantry. Wish me luck at the store....we really want to have some leftover money on Saturday so that we are able to eat out!

Also, if you would like any of these recipes, let me know, and I will be happy to post them!

***Note: I just got back from the grocery store and my total was $71.84. I totally stuck to my list with the exception of two one pound packages of hamburger meat that were reduced to half price, and one $0.95 roll of aluminum foil that I forgot to put on my list in the first place. This only leaves us with $28.16 extra for the week-it's going to be tough, but hopefully, we can do it!
